Charles Mason Remey (May 15, 1874 – February 4, 1974) is the son of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, first President of the Universal House of Justice of Baha’u’llah (www.UHJ.net), and 1st Guardian of the Baha’i Faith seated upon the throne of King David which is to last forever (Psalms 89; Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha (W&T), page 15).

“I have adopted you [Charles Mason Remey] as my son [Persian: Aghsan]. You have to appreciate this favor very much indeed. One should see that you are living according to the requirements of this sonship. You should be aware of your responsibilities. My prayers will help you. I always pray for you. ” (‘Abdu’l-Baha to Mason Remey, cf. “The Diaries of Mason Remey”, Folio 2, “A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land: Reminisces of the Master, 1921”, pp. 127-129. New York Public Library Collection)

Background

The most distinguishing feature of the life of Charles Mason Remey is his staunch and unwavering stance against the glaring Violation of the Covenant-breaking “Hands” of the Baha’i Faith. The atrocities of the Hands-Faith is infamous in its severities, cruelty, and disruption of the lives and families of the people. Knowing full-well that Charles Mason Remey was the legally adopted Aghsan-son of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, and the first duly appointed President of the Universal House of Justice of Baha’u’llah (ww.UHJ.net), these “Hands” led by Ruhiyyih Khanum and Hasan Balyuzi proceeded to hijack the Baha’i World Faith away from the true Universal House of Justice set up by Shoghi Effendi himself on January 9, 1951.

These “Hands” thus mislead millions of people into becoming scattered outside the provisions of the Covenant all throughout the entire globe. Mason Remey alone and unaided, as the adopted son of ‘Abdu’l-Baha stood in clear opposition to their violation, usurpation and atrocities.

Mason to this day remains a beacon of light guiding the people back as a “sign of God” (W&T, p. 11) to the recognize the true Universal House of Justice of Baha’u’llah (www.UHJ.net) from fakes, frauds and imitations — such as the fraud set up by the “Hands-Faith” in Ridvan of 1963 on Golomb (Golem) Street that has no executive seated upon David’s throne. They have no executive branch! They are the Covenant-breakers! They are in violation of the Covenant on page 15 of the sacred Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha!

Mason Remey was a pure, stainless, praiseworthy, and spiritual soul. Mason received nothing but the vehement confirming support of BOTH ‘Abdu’l-Baha, and Shoghi Effendi throughout their entire lifetimes, and respective ministries. The Founders of the Baha’i Faith have only the praises and glad-tidings of the blessings, and confirmations of God for Mason Remey. The slander of the violating “Hands” against Mason Remey, the only surviving son of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, is unfounded, undeserved, and without any merit. The people should free themselves of that slander, and political mudslinging against Mason, which prevents them from recognizing the true Universal House of Justice of Baha’u’llah (www.UHJ.net). As ‘Abdu’l-Baha has written:

“ALL-PRAISE TO HIM Who, by the Shield of His Covenant, hath guarded the Temple of His Cause from the darts of doubtfulness… through the aid of men whom the SLANDER of the SLANDERER AFFECT NOT, whom no earthly calling, glory and power can turn aside from the Covenant of God and His Testament, established firmly by His clear and manifest words, writ and revealed by His All-Glorious Pen and recorded in the Preserved Tablet.” (W&T, p. 3)

Birth and Early Religious Life

Charles Mason Remey, known to his friends as Mason, was born in Burlington, Iowa, on May 15, 1874. Mason was the eldest son of Rear Admiral George Collier Remey and Mary Josephine Mason Remey, the daughter of Charles Mason, the first Chief Justice of Iowa. One of his ancestors, John Howland, came to America as a pilgrim aboard the Mayflower.

Charles Mason Remey’s parents raised him in the Episcopal Church. Remey was introduced to the Baha’i Faith in 1899 by May Ellis Bolles, the future mother of Ruhiyyih Khanum, while in Paris, France. Mason immediately accepted Baha’u’llah as the second coming of Christ prophesied to appear in the potency of the “Everlasting Father” seated upon the throne of King David (Isaiah 9:6, 7).

Mason soon traveled to the Holy Land, circa 1900, where he completed the Baha’i Firesides series with ‘Abdu’l-Baha himself, at the school in Haifa. Upon Mason’s graduation from the Fireside series, ‘Abdu’l-Baha immediately adopted Mason as his son and successor to the throne of King David. ‘Abdu’l-Baha then appointed Mason over the International Baha’i teaching affairs for firmness in the Covenant.

“O thou herald of the Covenant! Thy letters have been received and an answer has been written. Verily thou art firm in the Covenant, art self-sacrificing, art the son of the Kingdom and dost deserve the confirmations of His Holiness Baha’u’llah.” (December 1920 – translation by Shoghi Effendi)

Profession as Architect

Remey trained as an architect at Cornell University (1893-1896) and the Ecole des Arts in Paris, France (1896-1903). ‘Abdu’l-Baha, the son and successor of Baha’u’llah, the Founder of the Baha’i Faith, appointed him to design the future Baha’i Temple at Mt Carmel, Israel. Shoghi Effendi, the grandson and successor of ‘Abdu’l-Baha and the Guardian of the Baha’i Faith from 1922-1957, approved Remey’s design for the project. Shoghi Effendi further directed Mason Remey to design Baha’i Temples for construction in Teheran, Iran; Kampala, Africa; and Sidney, Australia, and to initiate the design of the International Baha’i Archives in Haifa, Israel. During ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s leadership of the Faith, Remey was responsible for the approval of the design for the “Mother Temple of the West,” the Baha’i House of Worship in North America, built in Willmette, Illinois, beginning in 1920.

‘Abdu’l-Baha praised Remey’s efforts and character in a Tablet to Corrine True, published in the Baha’i newsletter “Star of the West” in August 1920. What follows is one of the many examples of ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s affection and love for Mason Remey:

“Praise be unto God, that the model of the Mashriq’ul Adhkar made by Mr. Bourgeois was approved by his honor, Mr. Remey, and selected by the Convention. His honor, Mr. Remey is, verily, of perfect sincerity. He is like unto transparent water, filtered; lucid and without any impurity. He worked earnestly for several years, but he did not have any personal motive. He has not attachment to anything except to the Cause of God. This is the spirit of the firm and this is the characteristic of the sincere.” (Star of the West. Volume 11, No. 9, 20 August 1920 p. 139).

The Davidic Line of Descent from Baha’u’llah

In the Book of His Covenant and in the Aqdas, Baha’u’llah appoints His eldest son ‘Abdu’l-Baha, The Most Great Branch, to succeed Himself upon the Throne of David (Baha’i World Faith, p. 209). ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s son, Husayn, died in infancy so Baha’u’llah appointed ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s brother, Muhammad Ali, the lesser Branch, to succeed ‘Abdu’l-Baha. But Muhammad Ali broke the Covenant of Baha’u’llah, so at the same time that ‘Abdu’l-Baha cut this Branch off the Davidic tree, He adopted Mason Remey to be “His son”, in the same manner that the Christians state that Joseph adopted Jesus to be his son, grafting this Branch to the Davidic tree. He called Mason Remey “Aghsan”—my son—almost every time that he addressed him. These are found in many Tablets addressed to Mason Remey recorded in the “Star of the West” Magazine. He is the only person in this world that he referred to as Aghsan, my son, grafting him into the Davidic tree (“O My Dear Son!”, ‘Star of the West’ p.144 Vol. X. “O thou enlightened and beloved son!”, ‘Star of the West’ p. 229 Vol. XI).

“O my dear son! Numerous letters have been received from you and their contents have all been conducive to happiness. Praise be to God, thou art confirmed in service to the Kingdom, art promulgating divine teachings, art raising the call of the oneness of mankind, art detaching the souls from ignorant racial prejudices, art summoning them to the investigation of truth, art showing forth unto them the light of guidance and art offering them the chalice of the wine of the love of God. This blessed purpose of thine is the magnet of the confirmations of the Abha Kingdom.” (‘Abdu’l-Baha to Mason, July 1919 – translation by Shoghi Efffendi)

“O thou enlightened beloved son!” (‘Abdu’l-Baha to Mason, November 1920)

‘Abdu’l-Baha didn’t speak English. The way you say “my son” in Persian is “Aghsan”. In ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s ‘Last Tablet to America’ He states: “Consider! The Divine Gardener cuts off the dry or weak branch from the good tree and grafts to it a branch from another tree. He both separates and unites” (Baha’i World Faith, p. 438). Not only did the Christians uphold the adoption principle for the Messiahship as in the Joseph-Jesus instance, but ‘Abdu’l-Baha upheld it in His Last Tablet to America; this principle has been upheld all the way back into antiquity and all the way down to our present times by peoples, kindreds and governments. It is a universal principle. (The Most Mighty Document (TMMD), p. iii)

The Law of Adoption

When ‘Abdu’l-Baha adopted Mason Remey to succeed him to the throne of David as his son, this was legal and binding. According to the laws of the Ottoman Empire of the Middle East that ruled over Palestine before it became the state of Israel, a legal adoption occurred when a man called another his son. Then the British Mandate of the West which succeeded the Ottoman Empire retained the adoption laws of the Ottoman Empire as legal and binding under their rule. Then, for the Israeli government, the law for adoption remained the same. If a man calls another his son and leaves him a token to show inheritance (whether it be a stick or a stone or something), then the adoption is legal and binding. When ‘Abdu’l-Baha proclaimed that Mason was his son (privately, publicly and in letters published in Star of the West Magazine), these were not “vague terms of affection but expressed the precise legal relationship which had been created between them.” Here is cited the law of adoption in the Middle East (from Ottoman times to the present) upheld by the British Mandate of the West and the Israeli Supreme Court on June 22, 1960, long after ‘Abdu’l-Baha adopted Mason to be his son and heir.

“This idea of equating adopted children with natural children in matters of succession is well expressed in a responsum of Rabbi Jacob Emden which the learned Judge cited in another decision, In re: Succession of the late Yoseph Blum deceased (4) (at pp. 161), as follows: “If he rears the child for the glory of God the child is certainly to be regarded as his child and not only in lineage, but even where the child had parents and is being brought up by the stranger as a meritorious act, if the latter has no children [‘Abdu’l-Baha had no living natural sons] and is bringing up the child to be his son and to succeed him and they address each other as father and son” (response of Yavetz, Part I, section 168). So also with the deceased in the present case: He reared the child as his daughter to succeed him, and she called him “father” and he called her “daughter.” These were not vague terms of affection but expressed the precise legal relationship which had been created between them – at any rate with respect to the matter of succession.” (Selected Judgments from the Israeli Supreme Court, Vol. III, pp. 426-7.)

This was usually confirmed by some token such as a stick or a stone, or something, to make it definite that it was meant that it was a legal adoption. This is called institutive evidence.

“Institutive evidence is that which is created or adopted as a memorial of a fact and for the purpose of being evidence of the fact. The stone set up for a boundary; the giving of a clod of earth or a twig in livery of seizing as evidence or the transfer of the title [etc]….” (Sagebeer, The Bible in Court, p. 104.)

“The Master gave Mr. Remey what no one else ever received – relics of the Blood and Hair of Baha’u’llah; in the East this act symbolizes Mr. Remey’s adoption as a Son by ‘Abdu’l-Baha and his becoming a member of the Holy Family.” (Questions and Answers about Charles Mason Remey and the Baha’i Faith, by F.C. Spataro.)

Shoghi Effendi recognized ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s adoption of Mason as true and legal. Immediately after the death of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, Shoghi Effendi called Mason to the Holy land in February and March of 1922 giving to him a “package of ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s most sacred possession,” which was left to Shoghi Effendi, as the executor of ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s Will to deliver to Mason Remey as his inheritance: “locks of Baha’u’llah’s hair” (which represents the headship of the International Baha’i Council/Universal House of Justice) and “drops of his coagulated blood” (which represents the bloodline of David and Baha’u’llah). On the outside of the package Shoghi Effendi addressed it to ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s “dear son” whom he later appointed to the headship of the IBC/UHJ. The hair and blood are the tokens of inheritance. ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s most prized possession shows the evidence of the legal adoption passed on from father to son – ‘Abdu’l-Baha to Mason. This type of evidence of a token is called “institutive evidence.”
(The Most Mighty Document (TMMD), p. iv)

The packet’s outside envelope contained these handwritten words:

“Coagulated drops of Baha’u’llah’s All-Sacred Blood and Ringlets of His Most Blessed Locks presented as my most precious possession to ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s “dear son” Mr. Charles Mason Remey as a token of my Baha’i affection and brotherly love. Shoghi”

On the packet’s inner sealed envelope was handwritten:

“Of all the remnants of Baha’u’llah’s all-Sacred Person, the most hallowed, the most precious, confidently delivered into the hands of my brother and co-worker in the Cause of God, Mr. Remey. Shoghi March 1922”

Continuing the Davidic Throne-Line

At the time that ‘Abdu’l-Baha adopted Mason as his son, Mason was not yet married. As his father, ‘Abdu’l-Baha was eager to see that his son Mason should marry, and have grandchildren that would ensure the continuation of the Davidic throne-line that ‘Abdu’l-Baha had inherited from his own father, Baha’u’llah, before him. Noticing that Mason and Juliet Thompson had taken a natural interest in each other, ‘Abdu’l-Baha encouraged their union, and acceptance of Juliet as his soon to be daughter-in law.

According to Juliet Thompson’s diary, ‘Abdu’l-Baha took interest in Juliet’s relationship with Mason, and in 1909 asked Juliet how she felt about it, requesting of her:

“Give my greatest love to Mr. Remey and say: You are very dear to me. You are so dear to me that I think of you day and night. YOU ARE MY REAL SON. Therefore I have an idea for you. I hope it may come to pass.”

He told me He loved Mason Remey so much,” Thompson writes, “and He loved me so much that he wished us to marry. That was the meaning of His message to Mason. He said it would be a perfect union and good for the Cause. Then he asked me how I felt about it.” Juliet Thompson, The Diary of Juliet Thompson, pp. 71-76.

In preparing for Juliet and Mason’s engagement and marriage, ‘Abdu’l-Baha gave to Mason Baha’u’llah’s lapis lazuli ring with the Baha’i ringstone symbol engraved upon the large deep blue stone. Mason had the ring turned into a decorative pin as an engagement broach that he gave to Juliet while they were going steady.

Lua Getsinger, one of the other believers at that time, who was already married to someone else, became torn by the engagement of Mason and Juliet. Lua, was very firm in the Covenant, and extremely active in the Cause, but far outshined her husband, which caused tensions. Lua also had a deep love for Mason, which they both shared, and the two of them were attracted to one another. But it was not meant to be. Thus ‘Abdu’l-Baha encouraged the relationship with Juliet.

In any case, Lua was unable to restrain herself and her actions, and knowing the wishes of ‘Abdu’l-Baha for the succession of the Kingship, nevertheless could not stop herself from meddling in the affair to such a point that Juliet and Mason were never married, and the union and engagement was called off.

When the engagement fell through, Lua took the Lapis Lazuli engagement broach from Juliet, and wore it as her own Baha’i pin for the rest of her life, until many years later (her own marriage dried up) she later committed suicide by drinking Laudanum, unable to live without being the wife of Mason, whom she loved so dearly, both of whom were so active in the Cause.

Upon the death of Lua, Mason went and retrieved the lapis Lazuli broach that he had made from the ring of Baha’u’llah that ‘Abdu’l-Baha had given to him.

Three Tokens of Appointment

As lapis Lazuli is a symbol of the throne of King David, used in the Bible — and the symbol of this as a “signet ring” is also prophesied — Pepe, the son of Mason, had the pin made back into a ring, and used this lapis lazuli intaglio ring as the third token of appointment for the Guardianship.

The first token that of ‘Abdu’l-Baha to Mason is that of the hair and the blood passed from ‘Abdu’l-Baha to Mason via the executor of his estate Shoghi Effendi. The second token used in the Testing of the people in the Guardianship, was the gold nine-pointed star medallion, which Mason had made for Shoghi Effendi, that Pepe then inherited. The third token is that of the lapis lazuli ring, which passed from Pepe to Neal via the executor of Pepe’s estate in 1994.

In following the example of Baha’u’llah that turned over all the relics, rings, pens, and pen case of the Bab to the Violator of the Bab’s covenant, Mirza Yahya, Neal gave all the possessions of Mason and Pepe that he inherited over to the various Covenant-breaking Baha’i groups. When asked about this Neal explained:

“The people are to go by the criteria in the Will and Testament to recognize the successorship to the throne of King David. This is given on page 12 that he must be a son, that is an Aghsan, and second he must be appointed by the previous Guardian. Once this is established then they can recognize the true Universal House of Justice (www.UHJ.net) of Baha’u’llah, from fakes, frauds and imitations — for the true UHJ is the one with that descendant of King David through Baha‘u’llah and ‘Abdu’l-Baha as its living president. We cannot emphasize this point enough! — the Covenant-breakers in their obsession anti- the Davidic Kingship, have forced the issue to be this way. Though the Guardian/President has just a vote of one, and no veto power, the purpose of the appointed line is so we can recognize the true UHJ. It is the Council of the UHJ, and not the President, that has all power and is freed from all error.

“The people, therefore, are to learn the lesson that they are to go by the CRITERIA in the Will and Testament. They are not to go by those that possess the material relics, Baha’i shrines, gardens, centers and buildings. Possession of these items is NOT the criteria in the Will and Testament. If it were, then anyone could claim successorship by either stealing or fabricating fake relics! This is what led the majority astray in the first place, when the “Hands” hijacked all the relics and artifacts that were established in the Baha’i center archives in the Haifa in the Holy Land. The things I received such as the packet of the Hair and the Blood of Baha’u’llah, the medallions, and the lapis lazuli rings, and other artifacts, are not any more valuable than the other material possessions of Baha’u’llah and ‘Abdu’l-Baha. My wish was for all these to be eventually collected together into one place – a type of international Baha’i Smithsonian for all the people, and all Baha’i groups, to see and have access. Yes it is true these things played a significant role in the history of the Cause. But as that time has come and gone. They are simply that, relics of the past, previously used as institutive evidence, through which we came to understand and recognize the line of succession” (Interview with the Guardian, January 9, 2010)

Final Pilgrimage to the Holy Land: The Passing of ‘Abdu’l-Baha

At the time of the passing of ‘Abdu’l-Baha the people were expecting Mason to directly succeed his father ‘Abdu’l-Baha. The news of Shoghi Effendi’s appointment replacing Muhammad-Ali, came as a shock and test to the people! The throne-line of David is not passed down through the female line. Shoghi Effendi was ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s grandson through a daughter. Therefore the people knew that Shoghi Effendi could not inherit the throne of King David. Nevertheless Shoghi Effendi had been appointed successor named in the Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha as Guardian. No one was more surprised of this than Shoghi Effendi himself!

Shoghi Effendi was raised looking up to Mason Remey that was more than 20 years older than himself. Shoghi Effendi translated the many tablets of ‘Abdu’l-Baha to Mason and knew that Mason was to be ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s son and successor to the throne. Shoghi Effendi expected that upon the passing of ‘Abdu’l-Baha Mason would be the successor in the Faith. Shoghi Effendi was there during these many occasions that ‘Abdu’l-Baha reiterated that Mason was to be his son and successor to the throne:

“I have adopted you [Charles Mason Remey] as my son [Persian: Aghsan]. You have to appreciate this favor very much indeed. One should see that you are living according to the requirements of this sonship. You should be aware of your responsibilities. My prayers will help you. I always pray for you. ” (‘Abdu’l-Baha to Mason Remey, cf. “The Diaries of Mason Remey”, Folio 2, “A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land: Reminisces of the Master, 1921″, pp. 127-129. New York Public Library Collection)

When Shoghi Effendi was named as Guardian in the Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha the people rebelled against this. They attacked both Shoghi Effendi and the Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha itself. Mason stated that the backbiting, and slander against Shoghi Effendi was almost unbearable. The people were declaring Shoghi Effendi to be an usurper and a Covenant-breaker. They were trying to win the allegiance of Mason to their side in opposition to Shoghi Effendi. What did Mason do? He crossed over the shun line of OPPRESSION that was forming against Shoghi Effendi, and went to see Shoghi Effendi himself! Arriving in the Holy land, Mason read the Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha for the very first time together with Shoghi Effendi:

“Never have I read anything which gave me the joy and inspiration that this Holy document produced in my heart. It filled my heart with assurance that the Cause was safely guarded and gave me a fixed direction toward which to turn and a continuous center about which we are all to revolve so long as we are in this world. I rejoice at the Baha’i standard of excellence which it established…” (Charles Mason Remey, “A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land,” 1922, New York Public Library Collection, pp 8-9)

Understanding that both Mason Remey and Shoghi Effendi were the twin successors to ‘Abdu’l-Baha, Shoghi Effendi faithfully delivered Mason’s inheritance to the throne of King David. This was symbolized by the token of the packet of the hair and the blood of Baha’u’llah, that Shoghi Effendi gave Mason at the end of Mason’s 1922 pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Shoghi Effendi then proceeded to set up the Universal House of Justice on January 9, 1951, and welcomed Mason Remey as its first President, the first President of the Universal House of Justice on March 2, 1951, that same year.

In 1950 Remey moved his residence from Washington, D.C., to Haifa, Israel, at the request of Shoghi Effendi. In January 1951, Shoghi Effendi issued his historic Proclamation announcing the formation of the International Baha’i Council (IBC), the evolution of which he described as:

“this first embryonic International Institution, marking its development into officially recognized Bahá’í Court, its transformation into duly elected body, its efflorescence into Universal House (of) Justice .” (Messages to the Baha’i World, p.7-8)

Shoghi Effendi announced Remey’s appointment as the President of the International Baha’i Council (IBC) in a cablegram dated March 2, 1951. The same cablegram to the Persian and Arabic Baha’is used the term “Ra’is” (meaning in both Arabic and Farsi “president” or “head”) of the IBC. “Ra’is” is the same term used by ‘Abdu’l-Baha in His Will and Testament in the passage on page 14 referring to the Guardian as the “sacred head and distinguished member” of the Universal House of Justice.

Ministry as Guardian

When Shoghi Effendi passed on in 1957, under nefarious circumstance, Ruhiyyih Khanum and the Hands of the Cause met in London and later in a private Conclave at Bahji in Haifa. Mason Remey had also been appointed among the contingent of the 27 Hands of Shoghi Effendi. Much speculation surrounds this time period because the Hands met in secret and kept no minutes of their meeting. According to the Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha the “Hands” are not “freed from all error” and have no conferred infallibility. Knowing this, and knowing that the majority of people knew this as well, the “Hands” declared that as Shoghi Effendi had inherited the conferred infallibility after Baha’u’llah and ‘Abdu’l-Baha – therefore they had to go from one point of infallibility to another point of infallibility. That next point of infallibility could only be the Supreme Institution named in the sacred Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, the Universal House of Justice (www.UHJ.net).

Now, Shoghi Effendi had already set up the Universal House of Justice on January 9, 1951 almost 7 years before his own untimely passing, but Shoghi Effendi had never activated it. The other 8 members of the UHJ were also appointed by Shoghi Effendi as well, and Mason was the President with only a vote of one. The other 8 members of the UHJ including Ruhiyyih Kahnum the liaison officer, were all Hands of the Cause of God. These refused to activate the UHJ, and refused to allow Mason to call and chair a meeting. Had they called and chaired the meeting of the UHJ immediately on November 4th, 1957 when Shoghi Effendi died, these errors among the people would not have been made, and the “Hands” would not have been deceived into hijacking the Baha’i faith.

“All must seek guidance and turn unto the Center of the Cause [Shoghi Effendi] and [after Shoghi to] the House of Justice. And he that turneth unto whatsoever else is indeed in grievous error.” (W&T, p. 25)

Thus, when they turned to the “Hands,” which are “unto whatsoever else,” they were indeed in grievous error — the grievous error of COVENANT-BREAKING!!

Mason’s mistake, was not forcing the issue and calling the meeting of the Council of the UHJ immediately. Instead Mason went along with the other members as so-called “Hands” signing documents and making covenants with them, that the UHJ would be activated and incorporated with the State fop Israel, with him as the President in April of 1963.

Mason covenanted with the other “Hands,” that they would all stick strictly with Shoghi Effendi’s plans for 1963 which included the Israeli State Baha’i Courts Law officially recognizing the UHJ established in January 9, 1951 with Mason as its President as the Supreme Legal Body over all Baha’i affairs.

Mason signed these documents with the rest of the “Hands” acknowledging three points: 1) that the plans for the UHJ with him as its appointed President for 1963 were to go ahead as scheduled; 2) Shoghi Effendi had no son, and no successor, and that line of infallible guardianship from Shoghi Effendi had ended; and 3) all the other natural branches, Aghsan of the family of Baha’u’llah and ‘Abdu’l-Baha were either dead or expelled from the Baha’i faith as Covenant-breakers in the lifetime of both ‘Abdu’l-Baha and Shoghi Effendi. This left only one Aghsan alive in all the world, Mason Remey of the Davidic line — not that of Shoghi Effendi which was infallible.

However the majority of the people were ignorant about the details of these things. Mason’s mistake was trusting Covenant-breakers to keep their word! Once they were firm in the saddle, they — the “Hands” — immediately attacked Shoghi Effendi’s plan for the UHJ he himself set up in 1951 to become the officially recognized Baha’i Court in 1963! They met in November of 1959, and dismantled Shoghi Effendi’s UHJ with Mason as its president, calling for the election of a headless Council without a Davidic King as its president instead. This is when Mason Remey broke away from them in November of 1959, to defend the Universal House of Justice Shoghi Effendi set up in 1951, and made his proclamation in April 1960.

Proclamation as Guardian of the Baha’i Faith

In his Proclamation in April of 1960 Mason Remey announces that the Hands have violated the Covenant by attempting to dismantle the UHJ that Shoghi Effendi himself set up on January 9, 1951. The Hands were able to deceive the people because Shoghi Effendi set up the UHJ in four stages in the name “first International Baha’i Council.” The “Hands” used the pretext that the IBC was not actually the UHJ, but something else that was not freed from all error. Obviously the IBC is the UHJ and with the passing of Shoghi Effendi should have been activated as it had recovered full power from the sacred Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha.

Mason made his case as the first present of the UHJ, but it was too late the “Hands” and their cronies were already firm in the saddle. The majority of the people, then fell away and left the faith altogether, not going along with the violation of the Hands, but also not realizing that Mason Remey is the actual legally adopted son of ‘Abdu’l-Baha and therefore an Aghsan!

The Universal House of Justice, at the violation of the “Hands”, was then, “given the two wings of an eagle” and moved out of the Holy Land to the place designated by ‘Abdu’l-Baha during his visit to the United States of America in 1912 during his rest in the Rocky Mountains.

Notability and Contributions

A prolific writer, Mason wrote numerous published and personal articles promoting the Baha’i Faith, including `Abdu’l-Baha – The Center of the Covenant and the five volume A Comprehensive History of the Baha’i Movement (1927), The Baha’i Revelation and Reconstruction (1919), Constructive Principles of The Baha’i Movement (1917), and The Baha’i Movement: A Series of Nineteen Papers (1912) are a few of the titles of the many works Mason produced while ‘Abdu’l-Baha was still alive. Mason’s life was recorded in considerable details in his diaries which in 1940 he provided copies and selected writings to several public libraries. He also hermetically sealed hundreds of volumes of his writings, books and epistles, in vacuum sealed steal cases which he deposited in famous libraries throughout the entire world not to be open until the year 1995 that Mason prophesied the third guardian in succession from himself would begin his own ministry. Mason’s son and successor Pepe passed on April 11, 1994, making this prediction accurately fulfilled. Also included in most of the collections were authentic copies of the original tablets and letters ‘Abdu’l-Baha wrote to Mason.

Passing and Appointment of Successorship

Having faithfully served the Cause of God his entire life, and having signle handedley withstood the violation of the “Hands” Mason passed on surrounded by his loved ones and family 100 days short of his 100th birthday on Febrary 4, 1974.

Mason is laid to rest in double tomb of exquisite white marble near his home in outside Florence Italy. Later upon his passing in 1994, his son and successor, Pepe, was laid to rest next to Mason in the accompanying tomb.

To further test the people’s purity of heart, and working knowledge of the Covenant, Mason named many different people to be his successor as “guardian.” But only one of these, Pepe, was his Mason’s only son and therefore an Aghsan. The point is this. We must go by the criteria in the Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha. The “Hands” were right that the line of Davidic Kingship (entitled the guardianship) is restricted to the family line of Baha’u’llah entitled “Aghsan” literally branches. But they were wrong to reject Mason and peep as the only surviving Aghsan that never violated the Covenant, the son and grandson of ‘Abdu’l-Baha respectively.

Today, decades after the Violation of the “Hands” and the hijacking of the Baha’i World center properties in Haifa, Israel, thousands, and thousands of people, from al around the world, are coming out of the scattering to find out the truth about Mason Remey, and realize the greatness of his spiritual station as well as the insurmountable obstacles he withstood throughout his entire life. Some have criticized Mason’s actions that he took during his ministry. His son and successor Pepe explains:

“The conditions under which he [Mason] lived FORCED HIM to make the many steps he took and thus a great confusion [in the minds of those who failed the test] ensued as a result.”
(Pepe to Dr. Jensen, 24 July 1975)

As the people realize the Mason is the Aghsan-son of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, they are able to escape the violation of Ruhiyyih Khanum and the “Hands,” and various other groups, and come back under the provisions of the Covenant by recognizing the true Universal House of Justice of Baha’u’llah established by Shoghi Effendi on January 9, 1951, with the Davidic Kingship as it presented, seated upon the throen fo King David that passed down through Baha’u’llah, ‘Abdu’l-Baha, Mason, Pepe and Neal. The purpose of the Davidic Kingship being the president of the UHJ is so we can recognize the true Universal House of Justice (ww.UHJ.net) of Baha’u’llah from, fakes, frauds and imitations.
