There seems to be a great deal of misunderstanding about the court proceedings and rulings in this case. If you want to read for yourself what the NSA attempted to do, you can read the court documents at this link: http://www.truebahai.com/court_case.html
The Court ruled that the OBF and BPUPC were NOT successor organizations to the Remey group and therefore were not bound by the 1966 Order against Remey. Please note this was a ruling based upon corporate law and has nothing to do with the religious authority and succession of one Guardian to another. Jeffrey
I’m surprised to see an article like this in the Chicago Tribune. The author obviously has no idea what the Orthodox “Baha’is” are about.
Also, calling the Baha’i Faith a sect of Islam is like calling Christianity a form of Judaism. Kourosh

Thanks Janet, I appreciate your viewpoint and I agree. I would love it if we could, one and ALL, come together and, adhereing to Baha’i principals of consultation as enumerated by Shoghi Effendi, come to a unified understanding of the Revelation of Baha’u’llah and then, united in Faith and Sprit, begin to educate and help heal the nations of the world. “The leaves are for the healing of the nations.”
There is a tablet by Baha’u’llah called the Nightingale and the Crow. Teherzadeh talks about it:
“It likens the birds to the Owl[1]who once argued that the song of the Crow was much more melodious than that of the Nightingale. Challenging this statement, the Nightingale demanded some evidence, and invited the Owl to investigate the truth by hearing the melody of each bird, so that the sweet music of the Bird of Heaven might be distinguished from the croaking of the Crow. But the Owl refused and said ‘Once from inside a rose-garden the enchanting voice of a bird reached my ears, and when I enquired its origin, I was informed that the voice was that of the Crow. Simultaneously, a crow flew out of the garden and it became clear to me who the singer was.’
[1 The owl in Persian and Arabic literature is a symbol of doom and ruin.] 242
‘But that was My voice,’ said the Nightingale to the Owl,’and to prove it I can warble similar if not more beautiful melodies now.”I am not interested to hear Thy songs,’ the Owl made reply,’for I saw the Crow and have been assured by others that the melody from inside the garden was his. But those with unsullied hearts and sanctified ears have been able to distinguish the voice of the true Nightingale from that of the Crow.'[1]
The story of the Owl ends here, and the Rose continues its dialogue with the birds disguised as nightingales. It tells them that they too are of the same nature as the Owl, in that they prefer their own vain imaginings to the multitude of proofs and testimonies which have been demonstrated by the rose-like beauty of the Friend. It calls upon them to recognize the Rose by its charm and perfume and not through their own standards. As these exhortations reach their climax, a beautiful nightingale[1] with a melodious voice enters the garden and, enchanted with the beauty of the Rose, begins to circumambulate it.’Although outwardly you look like nightingales,’ it addresses 243 the birds in a tone of rebuke,’as a result of association with the Crow, you have learnt its ways and have acquired its characteristics.’ Pointing to the Rose it then declares:’This divine Rose is the object of the adoration of the nightingales of paradise, and this rose-garden is their abode. It is not a habitation for mortal birds. Take your leave and begone.'[2]”
The way to distinguish the Nightingale from the Crow is that the Nightingale is the one wanting evidence and is the one who invites the others to investigate and compare the voices to see which one is the true Nightingale. But the Owl refuses to investigate and says that it is convinced the Crow sang the beautiful melodies because it has been “assured by others” (in-justice) that it was the Crow.
The Baha’is Under the Provisions of the Covenant want more than anything the opportunity to be able to compare the melodies of all those who claim to be the Nightingale, i.e. the true Baha’i Faith as revealed by Baha’u’llah. We believe the Divine Standard has been unfurled and we invite all to join us under this Divine Standard of God showing how the whole of the world of humanity is one family. These are documented, historical proofs that can be investigated individually.

We achieve nothing by slandering each other; especially when slander is “couched” between the teachings.
What would happen if we prayed for ourselves and each other; for our hearts to be open and detached; to be available to God’s Will? What suffering might we save for us and the rest of mankind? What Truth might be revealed?
The truth is out there.

Bottom line, the true Universal House of Justice is distinguished from the fakes by having that “distinguished member for life of that body” i.e. the Guardian, at its head. Period. All the Sans-Guardian Baha’is can believe with all their heart and all their soul that they are “firm in the Covenant”, but when you actually read the Covenant, they are as far away from being “firm” as a piece of soggy milk toast. This is why they are always so paranoid because they want to keep their followers as brain-washed and controlled as possible. We, on the other hand are not afraid of others and their different ideas. The truth can always be held up to scrutiny. It is those who are hiding something who are the ones who don’t want any investigations going on. It doesn’t matter how great an “organization” you think you might have and how great your numbers are…you people don’t read the writings or history for that matter. The Baha’i Faith involves scriptural prophecy, the Baha’i Faith is the fulfillment of prophecy, not the fulfillment of expectations. This is a basic 101 teaching for Baha’is who are firm in the Covenant of the Baha’i Faith as written in the Kitab-i’Ahd and the Will & Testament. We have not deviated a hairs breadth from the revealed text, but the Sans-Guardian Haifan Baha’is just kind of make things up as they go. Give me a break….yeah right “Bada”? “God has changed His mind”? What a big pile of crap! God doesn’t change His mind, God’s mind and Will is laid down in an everlasting Covenant of which the Haifan Baha’is mutilated and have tenuous control over their believers at best at not investigating what really happened. How can anyone say they are “Firm in the Covenant” and go against every provision of the Will & Testament? The Guardianship continues to this Day and will always continue. The Test that came fifty years ago was failed by the majority of the Baha’is who weren’t educated because they didn’t teach. Today the Haifan Baha’i organization is a outward shell of what the Baha’i Faith is intended to be.
“Divorced from the institution of the Guardianship the World Order of Bahá’u’lláh would be mutilated and permanently deprived of that hereditary principle which, as ‘Abdu’l-Bahá has written, has been invariably upheld by the Law of God. “In all the Divine Dispensations,” He states, in a Tablet addressed to a follower of the Faith in Persia, “the eldest son hath been given extraordinary distinctions. Even the station of prophethood hath been his birthright.” Without such an institution the integrity of the Faith would be imperiled, and the stability of the entire fabric would be gravely endangered. Its prestige would suffer, the means required to enable it to take a long, an uninterrupted view over a series of generations would be completely lacking, and the necessary guidance to define the sphere of the legislative action of its elected representatives would be totally withdrawn.”
(Shoghi Effendi, The World Order of Baha’u’llah, p. 148)
This is the reality of the Sans-Guardian, Covenant-breaking outfit in Haifa. They are lost and confused and are experiencing “Exit by Troops” because of their efforts of “Protection” of the believers from the horrible information on how the Covenant hasn’t been broken, because God never breaks His Promise, and the explicit words and details of the Will of Abdu’l-Baha are fuliflled to the letter. The Baha’is Under the Provisions of the Covenant is just that, we are Under the provisons of the Covenant, not Over them like the Covenant-breakers who think they have God by the tail and can change whatever they want whenever they want. Sorry…the truth will prevail and all that is contained in the Fire Tablet will happen. Read it. Victor
It is rather ironic to hear Anonymous 222 refer to the Baha’i Faith as a cult. He himself has claimed to be a Manifestation of called and called Aleisster Crowley his forerunner. Susan
I would also point out that the absolutist and triumphalistic language and uncompromising Manichaean imagery the poster above is using is classic cult-diction. Anonymous222
Dictionaries do not define what cults are. There is a body of sociological literature with water-tight typologies and discussion that very much fits the Haifan Bahai organization like a glove. Besides the word “cult” in relation to the Baha’i faith has been used in numerous contexts and by numerous people. Juan Cole used it here:
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jrcole/bahai/1…
Karen Bacquet used it here:
http://www.icsahome.com/infoserv_articles/bac…
There is also a momentum of consensus outside of the Academy, given the inherent Stalinist behavior of the Haifan Baha’i institutions, that indeed it is a cult — in all the negative denotation of that word. Scientology also does not believe it is a cult. Yet it is an NRM cult, not just because Christians say so, but because there are critical typologies in the very secular discipline of the sociology of religion that very much put it under that rubric. The Haifan Bahai organization is very much an NRM cult on every level in the same way as Scientology is. There is no longstanding historical tradition of the Baha’i faith that can adequately define it as a World Religion and so circumvent the NRM cult rubric.
Furthemore, the mere fact that you people cannot even stomach the very existence of a rival schismatic body using the name “Baha’i” speaks volumes to that fact that you are indeed a cult — and one of the worst of them too IMV.
Finally, an organization that issues official directives to its representatives to spy and inform on people is a cult. That you don’t like or are embarrased by the fact is irrelevant to the issue that this is classic NRM cult-behavior.
The Haifan Baha’i organization is a cult. Get used to it! Anonymous222
As much as strident voices above would like to convey the International Baha’i Community as a cult, it simply doesn’t fit the definition. Look it up.
On another note, the discourse here could not happen were it not for the Internet. What you find on the Internet through a simple search for “Baha’i” provides ample evidence of a diverse and united community that is rational, outward-looking, well-regarded, united, and, by some accounts, rapidly growing.
And, in case anyone has failed to notice, this article appearing in a major American news publication has not been picked up by any other major news organizations. Why, because news editors elsewhere recognize that the critics don’t have anywhere near the same credibility that the Baha’i institutions and body of believers all over the world have. The Baha’i “brand” is strong. The Baha’i Community collectively has earned respect through its actions and its service over the decades in nation after nation in the world and at the United Nations.
Any one who follows mentions of “Baha’i” on the Internet can recognize in the handful of critics represented in this comment string a pattern of behavior that reflects some personal disappointment or grievance that has caused them to arise in venomous opposition. The personal stories of some who have identified themselves is well-known. Their critique of the Faith is not dispassionate or broadly general, but is deeply personal and highly individual, so individual that their positions have little relevance to the masses of spiritual seekers in the world who simply do not have their individual hang-ups. The dispassionate seeker wonders, why devote such energy trying to attack and tear down? What unmet purely personal needs are they attempting to meet through such vociferous rancour?
The Faith has encounted opposition from its earliest days. Being true to the Covenant is Central to being a Baha’i. Go on Baha’i pilgrimage and you hear the stories of what the Central Figures of the Faith had to endure and see the places associated with their suffering. You hear the stories of those who arose in opposition. Critics and opponents did not, however, deter the believers from teaching with great success or prevent the Faith from growing from a handful of centers to approximately 100,00 localities today.
